Our Story

How Rattana Counsel Came to Be

Rattana Counsel was founded in Bangkok by a small group of Thai legal professionals who found, over the course of their earlier careers, that inheritance and estate matters were routinely underserved. Clients facing complex succession questions — particularly those with connections to more than one country — were being passed between generalist firms that lacked the depth or the patience to handle their affairs well.

The name Rattana, meaning jewel or treasure in Thai, was chosen deliberately. An estate represents something accumulated over a lifetime — it deserves the same attention and protection. The firm began with a commitment to work on a small number of matters at any one time, giving each client the attention their situation warrants.

Since opening its doors on Sathorn Road, the practice has assisted individuals and families across a wide range of inheritance circumstances — from straightforward will preparations for long-term Bangkok residents, to multi-jurisdiction estate plans for clients with property and family in Thailand, Europe, and beyond.

"We take the time to understand each client's situation fully before offering any view. Estate matters touch on family, intention, and the particular circumstances of a life — they cannot be addressed with generic forms."

— Founding Counsel, Rattana Counsel

The firm maintains active membership in the Lawyers Council of Thailand and stays current with changes in Thai inheritance law, including developments affecting cross-border estate arrangements. All advice is given by qualified Thai counsel, with overseas coordination managed directly by our team.

Rattana Counsel does not advertise volume or speed as a virtue. What we offer is careful work, explained clearly, at a fee that is stated honestly from the outset.

Mission & Values

What We Hold to in Every Engagement

Precision in Drafting

Every document is prepared with care for language, legal form, and the particular circumstances of the client. We do not use templates where the matter calls for something more considered.

Genuine Listening

Estate matters are deeply personal. We ask the questions that need asking and take the time to hear the answers before offering any view on what the legal options might be.

Strict Confidentiality

All client discussions and documents are treated as confidential. No information relating to a client's estate arrangements is disclosed without explicit written consent.

Expertise & Context

Inheritance Law Practice in Thailand

Thailand's inheritance framework is set out primarily in the Civil and Commercial Code, which distinguishes between statutory heirs, testamentary heirs, and the particular rules that apply when property or parties cross national boundaries. Navigating this framework requires not only an understanding of the statute but familiarity with how Thai courts and registrars apply it in practice.

For clients with Thai property and family members in other countries, the legal picture becomes more complex. The question of which country's law governs a particular asset, how a Thai will interacts with a foreign estate plan, and what steps are required to make an estate plan enforceable in multiple places all require careful analysis rather than standard advice.

Rattana Counsel's work in Bangkok concentrates on will preparation under Thai law, estate planning consultations for clients with multi-country circumstances, and the preparation of comprehensive estate plans where a complete review and coordination of arrangements is called for. All three services are provided at stated fees with no hourly billing ambiguity.

The firm serves both Thai nationals and expatriates resident in Bangkok and elsewhere in Thailand, as well as international clients who hold Thai-sited assets or whose beneficiaries reside in Thailand. Initial enquiries are welcome by telephone or by the contact form on our website, and consultations can be arranged at our Sathorn office or, where circumstances make it appropriate, by other means.
